Polish Christmas Customs
Christmas season is marked by many Polish traditions. They have been cherished in our homes for years. There is certainly Advent, Christmas tree, wafer (oplatek) and sometimes, hay under the tablecloth. From childhood, we all participated in nurturing these beautiful customs.
On December 24, on Christmas Eve, the household members prepare the dinner. In accordance with the provisions of the Second Vatican Council, the gala dinner, that is Christmas Eve supper, takes place after dark and starts right after the “first star” appears in the sky. It alludes to the Star of Bethlehem announcing the birth of Jesus. Involves praying together and reading a Gospel passage. Then the household members break the wafer and make wishes.
